Poster.

Empire Cover.

Evaluation.

Our media project uses many different forms of conventions and many of them have come from different projects that we had seen before and also real film trailers and existing films.

During the editing we used a well known effect in which the piece was shown disturbing a news report, this portrayed the power of the ghost girl and her overall status throughout the piece. We also used a scream which is very iconic for a movie within the horror genre.

This was used a couple of times throughout our piece and allowed the audience to feel spine chilling moments that would happen within the real thing. We also used close ups of people’s faces to emphasize characters fears and emotions that they are portraying. We also used very slow and child like music to emphasize the fact that the ghost girl is only young and also the fact that Abi is the centre of the whole story line.

We also added a white hospital gown to show that the ghost girl had been transported to the hospital after being attacked by her mother and father and had died on a hospital bed.

We also used a white dress on the babysitter to show her innocence and naivety within the text.

In the opening of our trailer we show the news report of the anniversary of the death of a teenage girl that happened many years ago. This news report is disturbed by a sighting of the ghost girl forcing her way through the transition and stood within the house. There is also a shot of a child’s door to show that it will mainly be based on a child and the horror that she will have to endure. We also played child like screechy music over the top to show the disturbance of the piece and also the child like quality that Abi later adds to.

We changed many things throughout our piece and most of them worked quiet well. However, I do believe that we added certain things to the genre that probably wouldn’t have been used within other films, such as the possessing of a child. This gave our film a great depth as it pushed out of the normal stereotype of a child getting free; we focused it mainly around Abi so we could see how we could break the stereotype. Another thing we did that isn’t usually shown is the main fear factor within the first couple of seconds. Most horror movies wait till half way through the trailer or sometimes don’t show the feared character at all, where as we showed the ghost girl right at the beginning in a very effective and powerful way.
We used a popular stereotype throughout our text, and as Tessa Perkins said, stereotypes are usually a negative influence. We made sure that the main villain, although she is a ghost, is also a teenager. This will connect to the older generation because they have such a negative outlook on the youth of Britain today. It will also connect to the younger generation as horror is a very popular genre to them as it is crude and usually unforgiving. Overall I would give our film the rating of a 15 as it is a spine chilling horror that is disturbing and therefore needs a high viewing certificate.
I believe that many different media institutions would be interested in distributing our film. I think the main distributor would probably be Paramount as they have invested in many different horror movies that have all been successful, such as The Haunting, The Ring and What lies Beneath.
I believe institutions would want to invest in Abandoned because it is a different and wide spec film that will captivate the audience in an entirely new way. Our trailer shows a stereotype that is very well known in a different light. I believe this would enthuse the media institution and make them see a different, new and interesting text.
We aimed our film at teenagers who are between the ages of 16 to around about 25. We believe that the younger generations tend to like horrors as they give them a certain thrill, audiences too young could be terrified and therefore not want to see such an extreme horror and the older generations tend to like more realistic story lines. I would personally give this film a rating of 15 as it has some terrifying scenes that may harm certain peoples mental health and also could repeatedly have strong swearing within it. I would advertise the trailer through a internet viral campaign and also through magazine covers to help promote the poster. I believe this would again reflect through the age range we aimed for and also would become quiet widely advertised as most people who go on the web and read magazines are of a young age. Similar things were done with other films within the horror genre such as Blair witch project
and Cloverfield each of these films got a huge advertising push with their internet viral and each became very popular.

I also worked on a front cover for Empire magazine. I believed that if Empire was to run a front cover on Abandoned they would place ghost girl in the centre and focus the others around her. I then made the Empire title smudged and dragged down with a red highlight dripping down from the bottom of each letter. I then added the other things that would be in the magazine and decided it looked quiet bare, I looked through the tools on photo shop and saw the smudge tool again. I dragged around the ghost girl and created a white mist around her and this looked more authentic and spooky.

I then made a poster for our film. I began with a photo of ghost girl pulling the babysitter down the stairs whilst the baby sitter looks at the camera screaming. I followed the theme of the Empire magazine and used the smudge tool to pull in inwards to make it look like the ghost girl had corrupted it. I then smudged white lines outwards to fill the rest of the background and also to make it look like there is a white fire that the ghost girl has caused in the background, this would show the destruction she can do. I then added a photo of ghost girl and placed it over the top of the main picture. I edited it to be more translucent and moved the opacity down a large amount, this showed the ghost girls presence and the effect she had over the babysitter.
I then asked 5 people to tell me what they think of our trailer and give me feedback on 5 main questions. The questions I gave them were; what genre would you place this genre within? What appeared to be the main plot? Who appeared to be the main characters? What questions did the trailer leave you with? Would you like to see the full product, if so why? Many of the candidates I asked said that the genre they would place the trailer in a horror genre, this was the same as our initial intentions. Also all of the candidates I asked said that the plot was about a babysitter that was trapped within a house with the ghost girl and the main characters were the ghost girl and the babysitter, however, it didn’t focus enough around Abi. When I asked them the question about what the trailer left them thinking they said they wondered what would happen to the babysitter and also why the ghost girl was taunting the babysitter and Abi, this again was what I initially intended. Also all of the candidates said they would like to watch the full product and they think the posters that I had made reflected the movie well and incised them to see it. I think we could have added more scenes with Abi to show that she was one of the main focus points and also we could have sped the music up when the babysitter was running between the front door and the bathroom.
I believe I have widely developed my skills since AS and have therefore achieved a better film trailer. Last year I worked on a film opening about a solider being sent away to war and this year I have contrasted by filming and editing a trailer within the horror genre. I believe I have enhanced my editing skills by daring to further myself and push my main ambition for my trailer; this has lead to a more impacting trailer with a daring twist of adding a child. I feel I improved my sense of understanding within the filming as I had a better knowledge of camera maps, shooting schedules and story boards. Overall, I believe I have learnt a great deal this year and feel it can be reflected within our final trailer.
